Case Study: Circular Feed Solutions at a German Pig and Poultry Farm

Project Overview

At Spitzöderhof, a pig and poultry farm in Germany, is expanding its operations with a cutting-edge Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae production facility. Realized in collaboration with Agritech Solutions GmbH and Tobias Söltl, this project demonstrates how traditional livestock farms can integrate insect farming to create a more circular feed system.

Objectives

  • Add a high-efficiency BSF rearing facility to an existing pig and poultry farm

  • Convert industrial and agricultural by-products into fresh, high-quality protein for livestock feed

  • Supply larvae directly to the farm’s pigs and poultry, reducing reliance on conventional feed

Our approach

LIVIN farms provided comprehensive support for the project, including:

  • Bio-feasibility analysis to optimize site potential and production workflows

  • Engineering and factory design for large-scale BSF rearing

  • Delivery of Seedlings™, our proprietary starter larvae, to ensure consistent and reliable production

Impact

Once fully operational, the facility will produce 9,000 tons of fresh BSF larvae. These larvae will be fed directly to the farm’s pigs and poultry, creating a closed-loop feed system that reduces waste and supports sustainable livestock production.

Key takeaways

  • Traditional livestock farms can integrate insect farming as a complementary operation

  • Partnerships with experts like Agritech Solutions GmbH accelerate project delivery and optimize performance

  • Large-scale BSF production offers a scalable, sustainable feed solution for the livestock industry

Why integrate BSF Larvae into traditional farms?

  • Sustainability and circularity: BSF larvae transform organic by-products into valuable protein, reducing waste and lowering the farm’s environmental footprint.

  • Direct nutritional benefits: Feeding larvae directly to pigs and poultry provides high-quality protein, essential amino acids, and beneficial fats, supporting growth and overall animal health.

  • Behavioral enrichment: For pigs, larvae can reduce stress and harmful behaviors like tail biting by satisfying natural foraging and chewing instincts.

  • Operational efficiency: Producing feed on-site reduces dependency on external protein sources, stabilizes supply chains, and lowers feed costs.

  • Scalability: Integrating BSF larvae into existing operations can be done alongside traditional livestock production, creating a complementary, circular system without disrupting farm routines.

The Spitzöderhof project exemplifies our mission to combine technology, engineering, and sustainable practices to support farms in producing more resilient and circular livestock operations. Learn more about our technology and how it can support your business.
